Police: Man fatally shot at Sanford apartment complex

SANFORD, Fla. — A man was fatally shot early Tuesday at an apartment complex, the Sanford Police Department said.

The victim, whose identity wasn't released, was shot in the chest at about 3 a.m. at the Wyndham Place apartments on South Orlando Avenue near East Lake Mary Boulevard, Sanford police spokeswoman Bianca Gillett said.

The man was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital, where he died, Gillett said.

Police said there was an altercation between a man and a woman in an apartment and that another man shot the first man.

"We have the suspect in custody. We are not seeking anybody else at this time," Gillett said. "And the female is with our investigators and is cooperating with the investigation."

Resident Kristina Vargas has lived in the neighborhood for the last three years and said it’s the second shooting at the apartment complex in the last week.

She said she complained to management about the front gate not working and that it’s too easy for anyone to get into the complex.

“Once they shoot that gun, they have no control where that bullet goes and God forbid it hits a child,” Vargas said.

The shooting remains under investigation.
