WINTER PARK, Fla. —

One of two men wanted in connection with a stolen car accidentally shot himself while running away from officers, according to Winter Park police.

Police said they tried to take Roger Johnson into custody, but as he was running away he shot himself in the leg.

Police said the victim called to say he was in another car, following a man who stole his vehicle.

Police responded to the scene near Railroad and Webster avenues, and blocked in the driver, who they identified as Johnson.

Police said Johnson reversed the vehicle into an unmarked police cruiser and then got out and ran to a nearby business. As he was running, police said, Johnson removed a .44 caliber handgun from his pants and accidentally shot himself in the right calf.

A passenger in the car, Gerald Jones, was taken into custody at the scene.

Johnson will be charged with grand theft and aggravated assault, among other charges, police said.

Jones will be charged with trespass in a motor vehicle and possession of marijuana.

Johnson was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where his condition is not known.
