Police: Man wounded when gunmen shoot at car with children inside

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — A 31-year-old man was shot Sunday afternoon while he was sitting in a car with two children in the back seat, the Altamonte Springs Police Department said.

Two gunmen approached the car shortly after 6 p.m. and shot at it at North State Road 434 and Calabria Drive, hitting the man in the abdomen, Altamonte Springs police Officer Evelyn Estevez said.

“At some point, he came to a stop and was confronted by these two suspects,” Estevez said. “It appears the suspect was known to the victim. At this time, we have no reason to believe this was a random act of violence.”

The victim, whose identity wasn’t released, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment. He is in stable condition, police said.

“Gratefully, these children were not injured,” Estevez said. “They are safe with a family member right now.”

Resident Roxanne Cruzado said she heard the gunfire but didn't see the shooting.

“When I (came), the police are coming, and he's on the floor,” she said.

Resident Liz Easley, who has lived in the area for more than 30 years, said the neighborhood is typically quiet.

“It’s very rare for something like that to happen,” she said. “It's a safe neighborhood. Everybody kind of looks out for each other. If I see a strange car at somebody's house, I call the police.”

Police said the gunmen remain at large.

Investigators didn’t release a motive for the shooting, which remains under investigation.

No other details were given.
