ORLANDO, Fla. - Police continue to search for the gunman after a passenger in a vehicle was shot and the driver fled from the scene on foot not far from downtown Orlando on Tuesday night.
The shooting and vehicle crash happened at the intersection of Crystal Lake Drive and South Street shortly before 10 p.m.
According to police, the driver of the vehicle shot the passender and then ran away after crashing into the wall of the State Road 408 overpass.
The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds but was conscious and talking when he was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center.
A witness who saw the crash said he stopped to help and then quickly realized this accident was turning into a crime scene.
"He just said he had been shot and he didn't want to die and he said he could feel the gunshot wound," the witness said. "All I kept telling him was stay still, stay still because he was just going to make the bleeding worse."
The witness said the shooting victim was trying to concentrate on helping police find the person who shot him.
According to the witness, the victim couldn't tell him why the person shot him but he was able to describe the gunman to police.
Neighbors in the area are on
edge after the shooting.
"I'm worried, and I'm scared," said neighbor Havoc Gonzalez.
"We hear the crash and then we hear the bang of the gun and my husband said, 'You don't go out. Don't go out,'" said witness Elizabeth Sanderson, who was happy to hear the victim survived.
Officers continue to search for the driver. Anyone with information is asked to contact authorities.
