Police: Robber dressed as Santa claimed he had bomb

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — A Port Orange bank had to be evacuated Monday after authorities said a robber dressed as Santa Claus walked in and claimed he had a bomb.

Police said the suspect approached the bank teller at the SunTrust bank on Nova Road, wearing a Santa hat and a fake, white beard. They said he set a wrapped gift on the counter, along with a note that said there was an explosive inside the box.

Investigators said the clerk gave the robber some money, and then the suspect took off in a dark-colored car.

The bank was evacuated while the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad investigated.

They said the package did not contain any type of explosive.

The robber is still at large.
