Police: Man shot during robbery at motel near Universal

ORLANDO, Fla. — A robber shot a man Monday evening at a motel in the heart of the city's tourist district, the Orlando Police Department said.

The shooting was reported shortly after 8 p.m. at the Super 8 motel on American Way, near International Drive and South Kirkman Road, Orlando police Lt. Robert Terrell said.

A man in his 40s told police that a man robbed him of his cellphone at gunpoint and shot him in the lower torso outside his motel room, Terrell said.

Police said the victim, whose identity hasn't been released, was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Surveillance footage appears to show a man climbing a flight of stairs before pulling a pistol from his pocket.

Investigators describe the gunman as black, in his 30s, 5 feet 8 inches tall and of average build. They said he's clean-shaven and was last seen wearing a black hooded shirt, gray shorts and a camouflage hat.
