Police: Wheelchair bound man fatally shoots son in self-defense

LAKELAND, Fla. — Lakeland police said a wheelchair bound man shot and killed his son in self-defense Friday evening.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. at a home on Carlton Street in Lakeland.

When police arrived at the home, 43-year-old Lawrence Carlberg Jr. was found with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where he died.

Police said after investigating, they learned Carlberg Jr. had been involved in an ongoing argument with his father, 65-year-old Lawrence Carlberg Sr., who is wheelchair bound.

During the argument, Carlberg Sr. got his gun because he was in fear for his life, according to police. Investigators said when Carlberg Jr. lunged at his father, he opened fire on him, shooting his son once in the chest.

Police said Carlberg Jr. had moved back into his father's house recently.

After investigators spoke to the State Attorney's Office, they determined no charges would be filed against Carlberg Sr.
