SANFORD, Fla. - A 22-year-old woman who is considered a person of interest in the shooting death of a Sanford man surrendered to Seminole County deputies late Wednesday at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility, the Sanford Police Department said.

Johnterriel Carey was wanted in connection with the Nov. 22 death of Antoine Haggins, who was killed while sitting in his car at The Overlook at Monroe apartments, police said.

Investigators said Carey was seated beside Haggins when two unknown men approached the car and one of them shot him. They said the men ran away.

Carey told detectives that while one man asked Haggins for a lighter, the other sat in a backseat of the car and they both robbed him at gunpoint before shooting him, an arrest report said.

Investigators received several anonymous phone calls the next day reporting that Carey conspired with the robbers, the report said.

The report said Carey told investigators that she wanted to clear her name, but she wouldn't provide them her cellphone, which contains valuable evidence.

Investigators said that Carey initially cooperated with the investigation, but she stopped answering their phone calls and meeting with them. She denied being involved in the shooting.

Police said Carey was charged with tampering with evidence and remains a person of interest in Haggins’ death.

Carey has paid a $20,000 bail and is expected to be freed soon. A judge ordered that she be fitted with a GPS tracking device.
