Port Orange couple dies when small plane crashes in front yard of Polk County home

A Port Orange couple died Thursday morning when the small plane in which they were flying crashed into a neighborhood near Bartow Executive Airport.

Officials said the crash was reported shortly before 11:30 a.m. in the front yard of a home on Weston Road near Bomber Road and U.S. Highway 17.

Deputies said the plane was in communication with the airport and was intending to land.

There were no unusual or warning communications from the plane, deputies said.

The couple was pronounced dead when Polk County Fire Rescue and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrived.

The couple was identified as Bonnie Powell, 73, and Dennis Powell, 76, officials said.

No one else was injured.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.
