Port Orange official wants signs placed in yards to ID sex predators

The vice mayor of Port Orange said he wants to let sex predators know they aren't welcome in his city by putting signs in their yards letting everyone know a sex predator lives at that address.

"I don't care if it costs $1 or $100,000 to put up a sign, there are just some things you just can't put a price on," said Port Orange Vice Mayor Don Burnette.

Burnette is working on a plan that would put signs identifying sexual predators outside their homes.

"It's something that's being done in a city in north Florida called Perry and we want to take a look at it," said Burnette.

Burnette said he hopes the law makes the sexual predators think twice about living here in Port Orange.

"I'm not pulling out the welcome mat for any of them. If they decide on their own to move away then that's certainly their choice. I wouldn't shed a tear," said Burnette.

Port Orange has four people listed as registered sexual predators on the Florida Department of Law Enforcement sex offender site.

Some Port Orange residents favor the idea of the signs.

"I think it's a good idea. I think parents with children have a right to know, just to exercise caution," said resident John Pelton.

Some others said they don't want the signs in their neighborhoods.

"They're going to drive down the property values of this neighborhood big time," said resident Eric Keiser.

Keiser said he is concerned that adding the signs could motivate people to go after the predators.

"You put a tag on the person's doorstep and tell people where they live, what do you think they're going to do?" asked Keiser.

Burnette said the Port Orange city attorney is looking into the legality of the signs.
