Port St. John parents fight proposed drive-thru liquor store

PORT ST. JOHN, Fla. — Port St. John parents are fighting a plan to build a drive-thru liquor store in place of a church in the middle of their neighborhood.

The property along Fay Boulevard, near Adams Place, is across the street from a park and 185 feet from a school. Channel 9 spoke with residents who said their neighborhood will never be the same if the store opens.

"It would be a terrible idea," resident Naomi Colgin said.

Raw: Residents react to drive thru liquor store

Parents said the location isn't good because of its proximity to a park, a day care and an elementary school. The property owner said he has an offer and a signed contract from a developer who wants to buy the land and build the store.

The offer is only good if Brevard County approves a zoning change to allow a liquor store in the neighborhood.

"It's just a family-oriented place and I don't want to see that coming into our neighborhood," Colgin said.

Resident Courtney Luhmann said she has young children and isn't sure if the store is good idea, but she said she isn't sure it's a bad one either.

"I don't mean to play devil's advocate, but if people support the business, the business will stay in business, and if the people show that they don't want it, then the business will close down," Luhmann said.

A public hearing for the zoning change request will be held Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at the Port St. John Library. County commissioners will have the final say at the end of the month.
