Pulse shooting response ‘achieved best possible outcome,' FDLE report says

ORLANDO, Fla. — A newly released report by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement on its response to the Pulse nightclub attack says the agency “achieved the best possible outcome in multiple aspects of this tragedy.”

There was room for improvement, though, in the development of protocols to notify victims’ families and having a mass-notification system, the report said.

The FDLE report looked at many aspects of the response in the early morning of June 12, 2016, when a gunman entered Pulse nightclub in Orlando and opened fire.

The attack resulted in the deaths of 49 people and injured dozens of others.

Along with the family-notification protocols, the report also suggests the development of a management support team to handle logistical and financial needs of the response.

There was also a lack of immediate notification to Florida Fusion Center partners, a collaboration of state and federal agencies.

Overall, the report praised the response to the attack and found that the FDLE “exhibited exceptional communication and coordination among command staff members.”

The report indicates that actions are already underway to correct the areas in need of improvement and the agency is using the lessons learned the night of the attack to improve the response to future incidents.
