Recruiting under way for new Sanford police chief

SANFORD, Fla. — A third-party headhunter has begun the recruiting process to find Sanford's next police chief.

Interim Chief Rick Myers has been running the department since May.

He replaced Bill Lee, who was officially fired in June for his handling of the Trayvon Martin case.

Channel 9 got a list of 31 candidates being considered for the position. Only two of them are from the Central Florida area.

One is Lt. Paul Hopkins of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

The other is Deputy Chief Roderick Robinson of the Eustis Police Department.

The headhunter expects the city to begin its first round of interviews the second week of January.
