Rep. Webster gets earful at open house in The Villages

THE VILLAGES, Fla. — Supporters and protesters expressed was mixed emotions Friday at U.S. Rep. Dan Webster's open house in The Villages.

There was a large rally outside Webster’s office.

Channel 9's Myrt Price was at the open house, and estimated that hundreds of supporters and protesters showed up to greet the representative.

Some demanded answers from Webster about President Donald Trump’s policies.

"You're a (explicit) coward. Take some questions, be a man," said one protester.

Eyewitness News asked the representative how he thinks Trump is doing in office so far.

"I've got enough problems in Congress, that's what I'm doing. I'm elected to be in Congress and there is a separation of powers," Webster said.

Others held signs and demanded answers about Webster's stance on various issues.

"Are you supporting Paul Ryan's bill to do away with Medicare?" a person yelled.

Webster said he was happy to answer questions and welcome supporters and protesters.

“I think in the end, this is a country that listens to both sides and we’ll see what happens," Webster said. "The elections are the biggest speaking tool and they spoke in favor of me in that particular time. I’m in Congress, I’ll be here for two years. So for those who want me to listen to me, I’ll be glad to."

Many at the protest wanted to talk about Obamacare and its future.

"I really care about providing health care for everybody. Not just for those of us who are privileged enough for us to have health care," Webster said.

Eyewitness News asked the representative about any possible replacement for the plan if it's repealed.

"I've had a plan for four years, it's 174 pages. It covers more people and they get to keep the doctor they choose and it's been scored to save $2.3 trillion," Webster said.

People who came to support Webster were upset they couldn't hear him speak over others shouting.

"It was about what I expected. I knew there were going to be protesters here and that's their right to be here. I do regret that they did not let the congressman be heard," said Sandy Mott.
