Report: Drugs may have played role in death of Ormond Beach couple found on I-4

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — New autopsy results show drugs may have played a role in the deaths of an Ormond Beach couple found dead on Interstate 4 in DeLand.

Deputies would not say which person had drugs in their system and which type of drug was found.

Heather Kelsey, 30, and her husband, Daniel Kelsey, 32, of Ormond Beach, were found dead Saturday by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper who saw the couple’s SUV on the side of the road with the hazard lights on, authorities said.

The couple’s three young boys, who range in age from 8 months to 4 years old, were inside the SUV, unharmed.

An autopsy performed Tuesday did not reveal any signs of trauma on the couple. Investigators said they’re now waiting on toxicology tests.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the couple had a history of drug use, but Channel 9 did not find any arrest information in Volusia County.

“At first glance, the investigators feel (it) was an overdose, based on what they see,” Chitwood said.

No foul play is suspected.

Family and friends described them as a loving and happy couple.

The sheriff said the children are staying with family.
