Residents of West Melbourne neighborhood fed up with poor drainage system

WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. — Residents in a West Melbourne neighborhood want answers after heavy rain caused flooding in their neighborhood Thursday afternoon.

They said they have to deal with flooding every time it rains over Pine Lake Mobile Home Estates and the water doesn’t drain fast enough.

Although the rain stopped at 8:30 p.m., there was still a lot of water on the streets at 10 p.m.

Earlier in the evening, crews had to pull an SUV out of 4 feet of water.

The vehicle’s owner, Randolph Bates, is OK, and grateful for the help.

“I’m just overwhelmed with kindness. You don’t find that much these days,” Bates said.

Resident Abby Rasmussen said she wants something done about the flooding that happens at least once a year.

“I don’t want to wade through this water when there might be snakes or something,” she said.

The owner of the mobile home park, who asked not to be identified, said the drainage works and the ditches are clean.

She went on to say it’s just a lot for the system to handle when there’s excess rainfall.

The owner said the flooding should be gone by Friday morning unless there’s more rain.

She had no plans to put out any pumps to help it go down faster.
