Safety improvements planned for roads near UCF campus in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orange County commissioners and University of Central Florida administrators have agreed on a plan to make roads around the campus safer for pedestrians.

Commissioners unanimously approved the plan Tuesday, which arose from a two-year study of pedestrian and bicycle safety at UCF.

A local newspaper reported that since 2006, at least eight pedestrians have died close to campus, and more than 200 others who were walking or biking have been injured.

Improvements will include wider sidewalks, better lighting and new crosswalks on the busiest roads.

The county plans to pay for an estimated $5 million of the costs, while the university has pledged nearly $3.7 million.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
