Sanford community mourns mother, son killed in shooting

SANFORD, Fla. — A 7-year-old boy is fighting for his life after police said he was shot by his mother’s ex-boyfriend.

The Sanford community held a vigil for the boy’s mother and his 8-year-old brother,  who investigators said were killed in the same shooting.

The boys’ grandmother said she is devastated by the loss of her 8-year-old grandson, but is trying to stay strong for the 7-year-old as he fights for his life.

She said she is not walking out of the hospital until he walks out.

Community members in Sanford held hands and joined in prayer to remember the victims from Monday’s shooting.

Branden Christian died of his injuries Tuesday.

“This one hits home. This one hits the core of your soul and it’s just so unbelievable,” said family friend Rochelle Davis.

Davis told the crowd that she spoke with the boys’ grandmother, someone she has known most of her life.

“She’s not holding out very good, but with loved ones around and friends, and people praying and stuff, she’s holding out the best she can,” Davis said.

Investigators said Allen Cashe shot and killed LaTina Herring and shot her two boys, her father and then two bystanders.

The boys’ father had a stern message for Cashe.

“You did that. You took a piece of me. But God got you, though,” he said.

The two bystanders who were shot are stable.
