Sanford teen arrested for shooting near Seminole High School, police say

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Officers with the Sanford Police Department have arrested the teen who shot another student near Seminole High School, in Sanford, police said.

Police were notified of a shooting Wednesday around 1:30 p.m.

Police announced before 4 p.m., that they were searching for the gunman, Jaquan Alexander Grant, 16, a student at Seminole County Public Schools. He was arrested around 5:30 p.m.

One person, who is a student at Seminole High School, was shot and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police said the shooting is isolated, but it's unclear what led up to the shooting.

"You don't expect it and it's terrifying," said parent Tracy Walters.

The high school, along with Millennium Middle School, were briefly on a lockdown while police investigated.

Walt Griffin, the superintendent with Seminole County public schools, said in a statement:

"We are deeply saddened to learn of a shooting just outside of our Seminole High campus this afternoon. Our thoughts and condolences are with the victim's family during this difficult time. No other injuries have been reported and students on-campus are safe. Seminole High & Millennium Middle are currently on a Code Red lockdown out of an abundance of caution. We ask that parents please be patient as law enforcement and emergency personnel continue to work the scene. This means traffic on and off campus will be halted and buses will be delayed from leaving. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but know that the safety and well-being of our students is our utmost concern. We will send out phone and email blasts to our impacted families with more updates once we have more information."

The Lake Howell tennis match has been canceled following the shooting call, district officials said.
