School board action unlawful, Volusia County teachers union says

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — The Volusia Teachers Organization said it would be filing an Unfair Labor Practice complaint against the school board over a pay increase impasse.

The threat comes after a May 18 Volusia County School Board meeting where two pay increase options were approved.

In a letter to the Volusia County School Board and Superintendent James Russell, the VTO decried the action, saying it did nothing to resolve the issue.

“The (school board) did not resolve the impasse, but instead submitted two proposals for the bargaining unit to consider,” the letter said.

The first option was a 2-year deal with a 4 percent increase in pay, but included changes to teachers’ insurance plans.

The second option would leave the insurance plans intact, but would only be a 2 percent pay increase.

The complaint will be filed with the Florida Public Employees Relations Commission in the coming weeks, the letter said.
