Sewer line company selling warranties, confusing Apopka residents

APOPKA, Fla. — A letter has been showing up in mailboxes from an out-of-state company trying to sell sewer line warranties.

City Council leaders in Apopka approved a measure last year that allows the companies to send the mailers.

Channel 9’s Field Sutton asked the city why the company was selected and why another business closer to home didn’t get the endorsement.

The letters come from Service Line Warranties of America, in Pennsylvania. The letters have the city of Apopka’s seal and the mayor’s signature.

“It doesn’t imply that they must enroll. It just serves as a notice to them that the enrollment period is still ongoing,” said Brad Carmichael, with Service Line Warranties of America.

Some residents in Apopka told Eyewitness News they’re worried the letters appear to be a bill.

"It sort of makes you look like you don't have an option, even though they said it's up to each homeowner to decide if they want it or not,” resident Phillip Mathes said.
