Small plane plunges into ocean near Daytona Beach Shores

A small plane landed in the water off the coast of Daytona Beach Shores on Tuesday afternoon.
Aerial video from Skywitness 9 showed the plane bobbing in the ocean near Highway A1A and Broad Avenue, not far from several high-rise buildings and hotels.
Florida Air Recovery worked Wednesday morning to remove the plane.
"First thing we did when we arrived was make sure the scene was safe and remove all the fuel. Even though he says he ran out of fuel, there's always residual in the tanks,” Michael O'Shea with Florida Air Recovery, LLC said.
Crews removed the wings before lifting the plane onto a flatbed.
Channel 9 learned that only the pilot, Richard Goosman, was aboard the plane. He told rescuers that he was flying from his home state of North Carolina when he ran out of fuel shortly after 2:30 p.m.

"I saw the big tail come up, and then I thought it was a sailboat that flipped over," witness Ken Meldonian said. "And then you saw the wings of the plane. I said, 'Oh, my gosh. That's the crash.'"
Goosman clung to a wing of the plane until he was rescued by a lifeguard, officials said.
His condition wasn't released, but beach safety officials said he appeared to be alert and conscious. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
A bystander was treated at the scene for exhaustion.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
