Ball python loose in Volusia elementary school

DELAND, Fla. — Volusia County schools officials said they'll continue to search for a snake that got loose in an elementary school Monday.

Officials said the pet snake, named Brownie, escaped from its cage in a classroom at Citrus Grove Elementary School in DeLand Monday morning.

"We were kind of searching the book shelves and stuff. We searched all over the classroom," student Riley Johnson said.

School officials said they eventually moved the children into another classroom while searching for the snake, a 2-foot-long ball python that is not venemous.

"Some kids are kind of sad that we lost the snake, but some of us aren't that scared," Johnson said.

Florida Fish and Wildlife officials said the snake is not a danger to students.

"So now they're just on the look out for Brownie," Nancy Wait, with Volusia County Public Schools, said.
