Stats show hundreds of crimes each month in downtown Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. — A woman was attacked in downtown Orlando over the weekend when a man tried to grab her purse. But he didn't get away and is sitting in jail.

On Saturday night, Claudia Lefkowitz and her husband left a performance at the Mad Cow Theater on Church Street when she was blindsided.

"He was just right here, grabbing my purse off my shoulder," said Lefkowitz.

She said a struggle with the man ensued.

"And I fought with him and he actually grabbed the necklace.  And I think the fact he had the necklace as we were fighting caused him to lose his balance," said Lefkowitz.

Police arrested Larry Dorsey near the 55 West building and charged him with battery and robbery.

The attack left the victim calling for more police downtown.

"I do believe that would help citizens feel safer," said Lefkowitz.

Channel 9's Ryan Hughes checked crime stats for downtown Orlando since January and found that thousands of robbery, theft and assault incidents have been reported to the Orlando Police Department.

January had the highest number with more than 530 incidents reported.

So far nearly 200 crimes have been reported in downtown Orlando in June.

Lindsey Grandwohl witnessed the aftermath of the attack.

"It was alarming to think that I've been working here every other day for the past couple of months, and for all I know, that could be happening every weekend," said Grandwohl.

In the arrest report, officers said Dorsey ran from the scene, but was found hiding under a nearby SUV.
