Student hit while riding bike to school in Palm Bay

PALM BAY, Fla. — A driver hit a child who was riding his bicycle to school Wednesday morning in Palm Bay, officials said.

The incident happened at the intersection of Emerson Drive and Glencove Avenue in Palm Bay.

Police said the driver was coming off a side road when the student was hit.

The child had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital to be checked out, but officers said things could have been much worse.

"He was lucky with just some road rash. And the main thing, he has a small cut over his eye, and the only reason that he's in as good a shape as he is, is because he was wearing a bicycle helmet," said Samuel Ivery of the Palm Bay Police Department.

Officers said the student was crossing in a marked intersection.

Charges are pending against the driver.

The names of those involved were not released.
