DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Two men faced a Volusia County judge Thursday on murder charges in connection with the death of a 94-year-old man.
Dominick Jackson and Deckalis Few are accused of carjacking Vittario Vecchiarelli last year. Vecchiarelli died shortly after.
Daytona Beach police said it's clear that Vecchiarelli's death was a direct result of the actions of Few and Jackson.
Vecchiarelli was getting his mail in September with his car parked and running next to him. Police said the suspects and a third person pulled up in an pickup truck then Few jumped in Vecchiarelli's car.
Vecchiarelli tried to chase after them, but fell and soon lost consciousness as neighbors came to his aid.
Chief Mike Chitwood hopes a conviction for third-degree murder will keep the men behind bars for a long time.
Legal experts said because the charges are felony with a death involved and the suspects have several arrests in their criminal history, they could be looking at around 15 years in prison.
