Neighborhood standoff ends after man pulled from under home

OCOEE, Fla. - Deputies and SWAT members swarmed an Ocoee neighborhood, and a Publix shopping center late Wednesday afternoon, as they tried to find a man they believed was a danger to himself and others.

An Orange County Sheriff's representative said Rodney Werst, crawled beneath his home Wednesday, trying to avoid detection.

Neighbors were concerned.

"I felt scared. I thought they had a gun or something," one neighbor said.

Deputies believed Werst did have a gun.

Investigators said that just before 4 p.m. a woman, who described herself as a roommate of Werst's, called 911 and said Werst threw her out of the home on West Road.

Orange County deputies and Ocoee police rushed to the neighborhood near State Road 429 in the Ocoee area.

Initially deputies believed Werst was inside his home.

Deputies moved slowly toward the home, where they believed he was hiding.

"I've never seen so many cop cars in my life. I really don't know what went on," said a neighbor.

Around 7 p.m., deputies found Werst under the house, pulled him out and arrested him.

Investigators said he was wanted on a number of warrants, including carrying a concealed firearm and battery on a police officer.

Some business owners near the man's home told WFTV's Ryan Hughes that Werst has caused problems in the area for months.
