Teacher accused of sex with student was Facebook friends with victim

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Eyewitness News learned a teacher accused of having sex with at least two students was Facebook friends with one of the victims.

9 Investigates asked the district if it's time to keep teachers and students separate on social media.

WFTV spent the day checking which school districts allow teachers and students to communicate on social media.

Scott Kimbrough, 39, a math teacher at Lyman High School in Longwood, is still in jail Monday.

He was arrested twice last week, accused of having sex with students.

Channel 9's Karla Ray pressed the Seminole County School District on whether it's time to make changes to its social media policy.

Its policy permits teachers to befriend students on Facebook, a policy that's more relaxed than other districts in the area.

The judge ordered Saturday that Kimbrough was to have no contact with his alleged victim.

Student Nick Williams said incidents like this are good reason why teachers shouldn't be friends with children on Facebook.

While he doesn't believe all social media interaction should be banned, Williams said interaction should be controlled.

District officials wouldn't go on camera but said in a statement that teachers use social media to post assignments, notes and study guides for class.

Students said they've never seen a teacher use social media that way.

Tenth-grader Tyquaisha Coke said teachers usually post assignments and notes on education software like Skyword or Blackboard.

Twelfth-grader Lajaira Jaramillo said the sports teams use it to communicate.

"Other than that, I don't really find a way," Jaramillo said.

In Osceola and Lake counties, teachers are advised against becoming friends with students on social media, calling that kind of interaction "inappropriate."

In Orange County, teachers are only allowed to communicate with students through social media if it is school-related.

School leaders in Seminole County said they have no plans to change their policy, because for the most part teachers are using it appropriately.

Kimbrough did not respond to a request for a jailhouse interview Monday.
