Termite company workers shocked by power line while on roof of Daytona Beach business

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A 23-year-old man was shocked by a power line Friday morning while on the roof of the business, according to the Daytona Beach Fire Department.

A termite company was working to set up a tent over the SOS Elite Marine company building on South Beach Street when the worker walked into a power line, authorities said.

The man suffered “an entrance wound to his arm and an exit wound to his foot,” resulting in third-degree burns, the fire department said.

“While on the roof, the workers were setting up the tent to fumigate the business for termites, and one of the workers backed into a power line and got shocked,” said Sasha Staton of the Daytona Beach Fire Department.

Daytona Beach firefighters used an “aerial apparatus” to remove the man from the roof. The man was taken by ambulance to the Bethune Point Baseball Fields, where the Volusia County Sheriff's Office helicopter picked him up and airlifted him to Orlando Regional Medical Center.

“He was conscious as our firefighters were using the aerial apparatus to bring him down from the roof,” said Staton.

Florida Power and Light cut power to the business and the business next door for the safety of the firefighters and patient on the roof.

Power was restored once everyone was off the roof.

OSHA was also called to investigate the incident.

Prior to this incident at 7:10 a.m., another employee of the termite company was also shocked when he walked into a power line as well. The 28-year-old man was taken by EVAC to Halifax Hospital non-emergency to be evaluated.
