Troopers: Semi truck driver flees after load hits I-95 overpass

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Troopers said a semi truck was traveling southbound on Interstate 95 when a backhoe it was carrying crashed into an overpass.

The crash happened around 10 a.m. at the Fox Lake Road overpass in Titusville, according to FHP.

Troopers told WFTV the driver of the truck, 35-year-old Steven Avant, continued driving after the collision and exited onto SR 50.

"That's crazy. I don't understand that," driver Joseph Lamattina said.

FHP caught up with Avant and pulled over his semi truck shortly after. They inspected the backhoe and took measurements of the oversized load.

The overpass sustained minor damage and pieces of concrete landed on the highway, causing one lane to be shut down while crews cleaned up the mess.

A nearby resident said this isn't the first time the overpass has been hit.

"About 15 to 20 years ago we had a dump truck that was in the same situation, it was up instead of down," Don Page said.

Avant didn't want to talk to Eyewitness News about the incident. He was cited with leaving the scene of an accident and exceeding the maximum height of a load.
