Lanes of I-95 reopened after lightning strikes minivan, truck crashes

TITUSVILLE, Fla. — An accident and a lightning strike to a minivan caused traffic woes both northbound and southbound on Interstate 95 in Brevard County Wednesday afternoon.

A lightning strike to a minivan slowed traffic on I-95 southbound near Mims.

The driver whose vehicle was struck was in a caravan of rental vehicles traveling from Sanford to Port Canaveral.

The driver said his windshield was blown out. The front of that minivan burst into flames.

The driver said all four of the tires went flat and the engine shut off, leaving the vehicle sitting on the highway.

"There was a bang and a flash, and that fast, the windshield shattered," the driver said. "I didn't get hurt at all. I just felt glass bouncing off my arm."

At about the same time, a tractor-trailer crash closed the lanes of Interstate 95 northbound near Titusville.

I-95 northbound was closed at the Garden Street exit. There were reports of injuries.

Traffic was diverted onto U.S. Route 1, according to Brevard County Fire Rescue.
