Two men hit on the side of State Road 429

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. — Two men are in the hospital after being hit on the shoulder of State Road 429 Friday evening, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said the two men had pulled over a 2000 box truck and a 1998 Ford van on the northbound shoulder of SR-429 near New Independence Parkway and exited the vehicles around 5:10 p.m.

Troopers said a 2001 Ford pickup—driven by Leonires Velasquez, 22 of Winter Garden—swerved into the shoulder to avoid slowing traffic, hitting the van, which sent the box truck into the two men.

The box truck, which was carrying coconuts, overturned after hitting the two men, troopers said.

Troopers have not yet identified the two victims, who they say are in critical condition.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending, troopers said.
