Volusia County deputy charged with domestic battery against wife

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — An off-duty deputy in the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office was arrested Sunday after a domestic incident involving his wife, officials said.

Matthew Tremblay, 43, was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor domestic battery, the sheriff’s office said.

The incident was reported at 1:56 p.m. in the Orange City area. No one was injured, officials said.

Deputies said his wife called 911 when a discussion over home renovations turned violent.

“Does he have any weapons?” asked the 911 dispatcher.

“Oh yeah, he’s a law enforcement officer,” said Tremblay's wife.

Deputies who responded spoke to the woman, who told them she did not want to pursue criminal charges against her husband.

Tremblay told deputies that he grabbed his wife’s left arm to keep her from hitting him,’ a report said.

Tremblay, who was hired by the sheriff’s office in 2004, works in the motors unit in the Deltona district, the sheriff’s office said.

While deputies investigate, Tremblay will be reassigned to a non-law enforcement role.

A judge on Monday allowed Tremblay to have contact with his wife, but ordered that there be no violent contact with the victim. Tremblay is not  allowed to have any firearms or weapons.

Deputies said they have taken Tremblay’s department-issued gun, which is standard practice.
