Volusia man accused of killing grandma ruled competent for trial

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — A New Smyrna Beach man accused of killing his grandmother has been declared competent to stand trial.

Since being declared incompetent to stand trial in August, Patrick Campbell, 28, has been undergoing treatment at the North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center in Gainesville.

Matt Phillips, Campbell's public defender, said his client is still mentally ill and is being treated with anti-psychotic drugs. He said Campbell will continue undergoing treatment.

Campbell is accused of stabbing Darlene Robertson, 64, on March 17, 2015. He made bizarre statements at his first appearance, telling the judge he was a United States agent.

Judge: “You’re Mr. Campbell?”

Campbell: “Sir, I, I’m actually a United States agent. I have completed a sanctioned target and I have a sanction in hand for the matter at hand.”

Channel 9 was told that Campbell suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.
