NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - A man was found dead inside a burning mobile home in New Smyrna Beach Wednesday, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
The home on Porto Boulevard was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene, deputies said.
The family wept for the loss of their home, their pets and a family member.
Neighbors said the blaze was heartbreaking to watch.
John Buchanan was driving by when he ran to help.
"Flames were coming through the roof, the flames were coming through the windows and the smoke was so bad, I thought it was going to explode," said Buchanan. "Another lady said there were five dogs in the house, so I went around and kicked the back door in, but nothing came out. The entire house was full of smoke."
Buchanan called 911 as he checked the home for survivors.
Initially, he only knew of the five dogs inside as he described the fire to a 911 dispatcher, saying, "I can't hear them and the house is completely engulfed now. I mean, it's…I'm sure the dogs are dead."
However, rescue crews confirmed a man was also killed.
Officials said they found him in a wheelchair.
Investigators are still trying to determine why he did not make it out alive.
"It's a sad time for everyone that does live here though because it's a really small community," said Buchanan.
Authorities said an autopsy will be done in order to determine the cause of the man’s death.
The victim’s name was not released.
