Man, 2 dogs escape Volusia County house fire

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A Volusia County home was destroyed in a fire Wednesday, officials said.

Investigators said a man, along with his dogs, escaped the 1,100-square-foot home on San Jose Boulevard in Daytona Beach.

The homeowner, who did not give his name, said he felt lucky to be alive. He said he woke up and saw small flames, and then grabbed his two dogs and ran out of the home.

"Fell asleep and all the sudden he heard the dogs barking and they woke him up and he tried to grab whatever he could and get out of the house," said neighbor Tim Skowronski.

The homeowner said the home was then engulfed in flames.

"We're getting woken up at 3:30 in the morning and getting told to get the heck out of the house. It's pretty scary," said Skowronski. "I walk out of the trailer, and all I see is from one end of fence to the other, there's nothing but a wall of flames."

Authorities said no one was hurt, but the home is a total loss.

Fire officials said they are trying to figure out what caused the blaze.

The Red Cross is helping the homeowner find a place to stay, along with clothes and other necessities.
