What's that ring around the sun?

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The Channel 9 newsroom has been flooded with calls from people wondering what is causing a prominent ring around the sun Wednesday afternoon.

Channel 9 meteorologist Brian Shields offered an explanation: A 22 degree halo.

According to Shields the phenomenon is caused when light from the sun passes through ice crystals high up in the atmosphere. When the sun angle is just right you see the halo.
