Woman in critical condition after duplex fire in Cocoa

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The State Fire Marshal is investigating a fire that broke out at a home in Cocoa early Sunday morning and left a woman in critical condition.

The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. at a duplex on Country Lane Drive in Cocoa.

"We really didn't know that a fire was happening, all we heard was loud banging on our windows telling us to get out," said Joseph Daniels.

Firefighters awoke Daniels and his family and when they got outside they quickly realized what was going on.

"This house was pretty much in flames. I was like 'Oh my god it really is a fire'," Daniels said.

Officials said the homeowner was still inside the burning duplex and had to be rescued by firefighters.

"They dragged her out from her door... they had to push her chest a couple of times to see if she was breathing," Daniels said.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Officials have not released her identity.

Crews were eventually able to knock down the fire, but the home sustained severe damage.

A State Fire Marshal is trying to determine how the fire started.
