Lafortune and Cardozo had arranged to meet Peay and his long-term girlfriend at the restaurant to settle some “longstanding family differences,” Gillett said.

Documents obtained by

revealed that Peay had raised Cardozo since she was 3 years old, but that they hadn't spoken for six months because of her relationship with Lafortune.

“When the parties met, a verbal argument occurred,” Gillett said.

As Lafortune and Cardozo drove out of the parking lot in a Dodge Magnum, Gillett said, a single shot was fired from the car, critically wounding Peay.

After a judge ordered the two held without bond, Lafortune's mother yelled out in court and collapsed on the floor in the gallery.

"Oh, Jesus, help me, Jesus," his mother yelled.

As people moved in to help her, she proclaimed her son's innocence.

"My son, he didn't do it. He's a man, tried to kill my son, my baby's just 19. he tried to kill my son," she yelled.
