Woman gets life for killing husband sleeping on couch

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — A Tampa Bay area woman has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting her husband as he slept on their couch on Christmas Eve 2011.

A Hernando County judge sentenced 41-year-old Karen Biraghi on Thursday. She pleaded guilty in January to second-degree murder.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that Biraghi and her husband, Alan, had both been unfaithful in the time leading up to the shooting. Biraghi had a sexual encounter with a neighbor, and her husband was planning to move in with another woman.

A psychologist testified that Biraghi suffers from multiple disorders and has the coping skills of an adolescent because of physical and sexual abuse suffered as a child and, later, by her first husband.

Biraghi also abused alcohol and pain pills.
