ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A 29-year-old woman was critically injured Thursday evening when she was shot near Apopka, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies were called shortly before 9:15 p.m. to Boy Scout Road near South Binion Road, where they discovered the injured woman, Orange County Lt. Bob Padilla said.
The woman was driving home from work when someone shot her car multiple times, striking her in the upper torso, Padilla said.
The victim’s friend told Channel 9 that the two were speaking by phone when she heard about five gunshots and the victim stopped talking.
The victim was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition, Padilla said.
"Detectives are trying to determine if the victim was targeted or if this was a random act," he said.
A helicopter and K-9s were used to search for the gunman, but no one was found.
The shooting remains under investigation.
No other details were given.
