Wrong-way detection system expanding in Central Fla.

CENTRAL FLORIDA — More than one dozen drivers have been caught going the wrong way on Central Florida expressways. Those drivers have turned around before something tragic happened, thanks to a new warning system, officials said.

“That’s too many, way too many,” said driver Karen Hill.

The new warning system has been installed at five ramps on State Road 407 and the Beachline in the last year as part of a pilot program. The signs light up to tell drivers they’re going the wrong way.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said wrong-way drivers accounted for nearly 300 calls in Central Florida in the past 18 months.

“Most of the time you get the ones that are a little confused. But a lot of the times it’s people who are under the influence of something,” said Hill.

The Expressway Authority is working to add the system to another 19 ramps across the region.

The expansion could be complete by early 2017.
