PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. —

A 19-year-old man caught an 800-pound alligator with his fishing pole, WFTV learned on Tuesday.

The man said he got lucky when he and his family took out a gator-hunting boat on Friday in the St. Lucie canal. He said they crept up on the gator and he cast his rod.

"He came up and he was popping his jaw and stuff. That's how big he was. I was a little intimidated," said the man.

Although the gator's size is impressive, Florida Fish and Wildlife officials said there have been bigger. The biggest catch in the Sunshine State was a 14-foot gator that weighed over 1,000 pounds.
