BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. —
Hurricane Sandy brought heavy rain and strong wind that ripped the roofs off homes in Cuba and the National Hurricane Center expects Sandy to remain a hurricane as it moves through the Bahamas.
In Brevard County, cruise ships are being diverted to avoid areas where Sandy is causing problems.
There were two ships at Port Canaveral Thursday morning: a Disney cruise ship and Carnival cruise ship. Officials said the ships were scheduled to leave port Thursday night on schedule, but their itineraries have changed. The ships will be spending a day at sea rather than going straight to the Bahamas and meeting Sandy head on.
The ships can outrun and avoid storms like hurricanes, although the seas are going to be rough and people on board will probably feel some of the effects.
Meanwhile, Carnival is bringing both its ships, Pride and Glory, to Port Canaveral for ports of call on Friday. Both are ships that wouldn't normally stop there, but the cruise line has revised their schedules and has cut out stops in Freeport, Bahamas because of Sandy.
Those passengers will be offered excursions to the Kennedy Space Center and other attractions.
Officials said there were no cruise cancellations due to Sandy, but there is a lot of shuffling and itinerary changes in the works to keep passengers safe.
