VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. —
Despite the serious charges against her, Horvath was sentenced to house arrest and as long as she follows the rules, she won't go back to prison.
Cynthia Horvath faced a 15-year prison sentence Friday, but instead she went home.
"Do you plan to continue a relationship with this boy? Do you plan to talk to him at all in the future?" asked WFTV reporter Jason Allen.
After pleading no contest to a single count of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, she walked side by side with her husband and didn't answer a single question.
Horvath was a teacher at Warner Christian Academy in South Daytona, until students alerted staff to her year-long affair with a teenage boy.
Police reports revealed the pair secretly met for sex in Wal-Mart parking lots, underneath a bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway and in a couple of Daytona Beach hotels.
In court, the 45-year-old cheerleading coach acknowledged what she had done and thanked the court for their mercy.
"I am ashamed and repentant because my improper choices have harmed those who trusted me, and I hurt people I love. I apologize to all I have hurt or offended and plead for forgiveness," said Horvath.
Horvath's punishment is in line with other Florida teachers caught in similar situations. South Florida's Debbie Lafave received three years house arrest and seven years probation. Seminole County's Jennifer Tarkenton was sentenced to five years probation.
One of Horvath's attorneys said the boy involved in her affair was not a victim, that it was a consensual relationship and Horvath alone will be punished for it.
As part of Horvath's punishment she has to give up her teaching certificate, can not live or work near schools or children, but will be allowed to see her own children.
