City Of Orlando On Track To Install Red Light Cameras At 10 Intersections

The city of Orlando may join Orange County in putting up cameras to stop red light runners.

Monday, city commissioners approved a contract to pay a Georgia company $500,000 a year to install and maintain the camera system at ten different intersections. The mayor says the cameras have been proven to reduce serious crashes.

"We're really doing this as a means of public safety and most of the statistics show many accidents are caused by running red lights. If we can change the behavior that is one aspect of it," said Orlando mayor Buddy Dyer.

The deal hinges on whether or not lawmakers should allow cities to issue tickets to drivers who are caught on camera. If the laws aren't changed, the cameras will not be installed.
