ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —

The massacre at a Colorado movie theater that left 12 people dead is causing people to re-examine the right to bear arms.

Some people that WFTV spoke to said that individual gun owners should be held responsible for misuse, not the laws that permit them to carry.

“When they say a government ban on certain firearms will somehow make you safer, don't buy it for a second, because it's a lie. Their laws don't work, ” NRA President Wayne LaPierre said.

Several others feel that there should be more control over gun ownership.

“I think there should be more regulation for small, handheld concealable type of weapons,” resident Jake Merritt said.

“If you're a police officer, you need it for a necessity. If you're an average Joe walking down the street you don't need it, there's no point," another resident, Nicole Ramos, said.

The Second Amendment of the Constitution has stirred a great debate for a long time. That debate has become front and center after Friday's mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater.

“There are crazy people everywhere. I think it's important to try and limit violence without infringing on peoples' rights," Merritt said.

Even in these controversial times, supporters of gun rights stand by the Second Amendment.

"You should be able to protect your family. I have a concealed weapons permit and a gun in my house," said one Orlando resident.

In Florida, a concealed weapons permit or license isn’t necessary to buy a gun. However, people must go through a background check before being able to purchase a gun.
