Cops Caught On Camera Running Red Lights

ORLANDO, Fla. —

WFTV found out some of the drivers recorded running red lights at Orlando's worst intersection should be enforcing the laws, not breaking them. Time after time after time, police and deputies were caught on camera running the light at Conroy and Vineland roads.

Sometimes the officers themselves paid the tickets, but not always.

Red light cameras caught marked cars 19 times in Orlando over the last year and 14 of those times happened at the Conroy-Vineland intersection.

In cases like these, Orlando and Orange County said the employees driving the cars must pay the $125 tickets themselves.

"They are counseled and it's noted in their supervisory notes and, if it happens again, their take-home car privileges can be suspended for 30 days," said Sgt. Barb Jones, Orlando Police Department.

But not every officer or deputy caught on camera has had to pay up. Some have actually had their citations thrown out, because they could prove they were doing official police business.

"I think one was an armed carjacking, in-progress burglary," Jones explained.

An officer making a slow left turn on a red received a pass because he said he was on his way to assist a sheriff's deputy. Only three of ten Orlando police units caught on camera didn't have an acceptable excuse and some civilian drivers say they just want everyone held accountable.

The Orlando Police Department just updated its policy earlier this month to require employees to pay for red light tickets.

Orlando's had red-light cameras watching intersections since September 2008. Since then, more than 52,000 citations have been issued.

The city has issued $6.7 million in fines and collected more than $4.6 million. More than 3,200 drivers have been fined for repeated red-light running.
