VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. —
The evacuation order has been lifted for all homes near a 1,100-acre brush fire in north Volusia County that is 75 percent contained, according to officials.
Fire officials said the blaze remained 75 percent contained Sunday afternoon. The fire has grown slightly on Sunday and is now estimated to be 1,100 acres.
Strong winds have made the blaze hard to extinguish. Firefighters are dealing with 15 to 20 mph winds, with wind gusts reaching 25 mph.
There are 130 firefighters battling the brush fire from several agencies in Volusia and Flagler counties.
On Saturday, police had to evacuate roughly 300 homes near the fire.
Officials announced the evacuation order was lifted for all residents Sunday afternoon.
Luke Bedrosian's family was forced out on Saturday, because a plume of smoke was billowing behind his neighbor's house.
"I've got, not embers, but big chunks of ash flying in the backyard and the front of the house and everything," said Bedrosian.
People weren't the only ones forced to leave the area. The fire got so close to a ranch, strangers helped load horses on to a truck to get them to safety.
The dry conditions, wind and darkness weren't helping fire crews extinguish the fire, officials said.
Residents were hoping for the best, but didn't stick around to see what happened.
"It's kind of scary, you know… to make sure the family is OK," Bedrosian said.
I-95 was also shut down between mile marker 270 and 273 in Ormond Beach at around 2 p.m. Saturday. The closure caused a traffic mess in the area, but as conditions improved, troopers reopened the road by 8 p.m.
