Eyewitness News Makes History With High-Def TV

We're making history Thursday, June 29 on Eyewitness News. We're now broadcasting in true high-definition TV. The picture is clearer, the sound is better. It's called the most fundamental change since we went from black and white to color.

If you're watching Eyewitness News on a standard definition television, don't worry. Nothing will change. But if you're watching in high-def, we'll look a lot better!

First off, we've purchased state of the art high-definition studio cameras and built a news set designed specifically to enhance high-definition viewing.

All our graphics will be created in high-def, including all the maps and graphics that are used in Severe Weather Center 9. You and our meteorologists will see incoming weather with much more clarity. This speeds up forecasting and response. WFTV is the first television station in the country to use this blend of technology.

Our news video will change as well. Before, if you watched on an HD set, you saw what are called "wings" on either side of the picture. Now, we've changed the way we shoot our video. It's not high-def, but it will fill your entire 16 by 9 screen.

And, don't worry, we're not stretching the video, because it's being shot 16 by 9. In true 16 by 9, it fills the screen and you get to see more! Don't be fooled by what you may see other places. Only Eyewitness News is broadcasting in true 16 by 9 high-definition TV.
